The Red Dunes of Pacula: Mexico’s "Planet Mars"

The Dunas Rojas de San Francisco Pacula are a surreal natural wonder located in the state of Hidalgo. This unique landscape is famous for its rolling hills of vibrant, terracotta-red earth that contrast sharply with white limestone rocks and green mountain vegetation, making visitors feel as if they’ve stepped onto the surface of Mars.

  • The Soil & Color: The sand gets its intense red hue from a high concentration of iron oxide and laterite minerals. While it looks otherworldly, the soil is safe for visitors and creates a stunning backdrop for photography.

  • Location: Situated in the municipality of Pacula, Hidalgo, near the "Pueblo Mágico" of Zimapán and within the Sierra Gorda region.

  • Getting There from CDMX: It is approximately 230–250 km (about 145 miles) from Mexico City. The drive takes roughly 4 to 5 hours via the Mexico-Laredo highway. Note that the final stretch involves winding mountain roads and some unpaved paths, so a sturdy vehicle is recommended.

  • Where to Stay: There are no hotels directly at the dunes. Most visitors stay in the nearby town of Zimapán (about 1.5 hours away), which offers boutique hotels like Hotel del Ángel or Hotel Los Arcos. For a more rustic experience, there are local cabins and camping areas in the surrounding communities.

  • Activities:

    • Photography: The primary draw; the light at sunrise or sunset is spectacular.

    • Hiking & Exploring: Wandering through the formations and limestone labyrinths.

    • Mountain Biking: For those bringing their own equipment to navigate the rugged terrain.

    • Nearby Attractions: Visiting the Zimapán Dam, the Vigilante Monolith, or exploring the mining history of the region.
